Local Artisans and Vendors at Our Farm

It is not uncommon to see our Amish friends and neighbors working side by side with English (that’s what the Amish call non-Amish folks), and the Amish Farm and House is no exception.

In addition to our Amish farrier and various Amish friends who regularly sell their crafts through our farm, we are pleased to have various artisans who have found a home at the Amish Farm and House.

Artisans and vendors may not be available every day.

Wood carver demonstrating his craft.

Chris – Woodcarver

A visit to the Amish Farm and House isn’t the same without stopping in to get to know Chris, our resident woodcarver. He has been our resident woodcarver for over 25 years!  He is a nationally known author of several books about the art of whittling. His whittling books have been translated into several languages and his hand-carved roosters can be seen around the world.

Watch as Chris transforms a simple tree branch or twig into a beautiful and unique rooster–using just a pocket knife! Inside his shop, see one of the world’s smallest carved roosters (you’ll have to use a magnifying glass!)

One of these small roosters received a certificate from The Guinness Book of World Records! You’ll marvel at the wide variety of things that can be done from a simple pocket knife. Make sure to check out the souvenir “name logs” in his shop! Don’t forget to ask about his collection of slingshots too!

During the months when Chris is not at the farm regularly, his carvings are still on display and available for purchase in the gift shop.

Simple, hand made, dolls.

Esther O’Hara

Esther O’Hara is no longer an artisan at the Amish Farm and House. However, we still carry her original clay figurines- signature included! Here’s a little bit more about Esther:

Esther O’Hara is the creator of the now-famous faceless Amish figurines which are sold in gift shops nationally.  She designs the Amish line for Blossom Bucket Gift Company in Ohio.  Esther’s art gallery is inside the Amish Farm and House Gift Shop which you can visit without purchasing a tour ticket.  Her art gallery is the only place where you can purchase her handcrafted Amish figurines and hand-signed reproductions.  Esther’s specialty is “quilting with clay”, an intricate process of using colored clay to create miniature quilt designs.  These quilts are used to accent her Amish figurines.  In addition, she creates a line of quilted jewelry as well as another one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.

Blacksmith talking about his work.

Blacksmith

The Amish Farm and House is pleased to host members of the Pennsylvania Artist Blacksmith Association for special events. Our Civil-War era blacksmith shop comes alive as the blacksmith pounds away on the anvil.

During those special events, the blacksmith will demonstrate the art of blacksmithing and explain the importance of blacksmithing both in colonial America and to the Amish today.

A man speaking to a small crowd.

Elam – Amish Farrier

Elam is a local Amish farrier who specializes in horse hoof care. Elam incorporates both blacksmith’s skills and veterinarian’s skills to care for horses’ feet.

On our farm he will demonstrate how to make several different types of horse shoes. He will teach you everything you need to know about equine care. You can even purchase a horseshoe from Elam as a souvenir!

When Elam is not on the farm his work is still available for purchase in our gift shop.

Artisans and vendors may not be available every day.

Handmade dolls.

Rachel – Amish Crafter

Rachel Esh is new addition to our farm. She has a craft shop on our 15-acre farm. Rachel handcrafts Amish dolls and little souvenirs that fit perfectly into a suitcase. Rachel greats each guest that visits her shop and even demonstrates how she creates her handmade items.

If you’re looking for an authentic handmade Amish souvenir, look no further than Rachel’s craft shop!

Rachel is on the farm over the summer season every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. When you visit the farm and her shop remember to bring cash.
