"When music lovers who appreciate the little things in life key in on the sleek lines and fine woods of Alden Doug Smith's knee-high, handcrafted baby grands, the reaction is noteworthy. When I saw the pictures of them, I said, 'Oh yeah, I want one of those!' recalls Mark Vergenes, who works for Engle-Hambright & Davies Inc. with Smith's wife, Gwen. Smith's baby baby grands, at 21 inches high and 21 inches wide, are small pianos with big appeal--for both children and adults. Smith's baby grands--he has made four in all--sell to the tune of $800 to $1,500, with his handmade 10-inch high benches with velvet-covered seats. Smith's small pianos are constructed of an assortment of exotic woods such as quilted maple and zebra wood. He has painted them black or white and, in the case of the zebra-wood piano, added a clear-coat finish. This gives the piano top a unique striped look."
